The surgical achievements of Antoni Gabszewicz (1858-1919) in otorhinolaryngology
Andrzej Kierzek

In the second half of the XIX century, surgical wards of
many hospitals in Warsaw played an important role in
otorhinolaryngology. The professional and scientific activities
of Antoni Gabszewicz (1858-1919), a well-known Varsovian
surgeon, are shortly outlined. He was the head of the surgical
ward at the St. Roch Hospital in Warsaw. His contributions to
otorhinolaryngology have been broadly described: successful
surgical treatment of otorhinolaryngological diseases, such
as trepanations of mastoid process, operation of dermoid
cyst of frontal bone, operation of frontal abscess, resection
of mandibular ramus on account of actinomycosis, subhyoid
operation of larynx, external oesophagotomy, operation of
Stenonianus duct, are described in some more detail.
