Hearing evaluation in participants of Special Olympics – Healthy
Katarzyna Starska, Marek Łukomski

Introduction. International Healthy Hearing (HH) Program developed by International Special Olympics Committee in Washington DC performs hearing screening during athletics competitions in mentally retarded athletes.
Aim. The aim of this study was to assess hearing test results performed according to Special Olympics Incorporated (SOI) Healthy Athletes Program.
Material and methods. The study was performed in Polish participants of Special Olympics during XI International Summer Special Olympics Game Dublin 2003 and during Winter National Special Olympics Game Bialystok 2004. HH evaluation was divided into 4 screening sequences: otoscopy, otoacoustic emission (TEOAE), tympanometry and pure-tone audiometry. One hundred fourteen athletes participating in 14 disciplines were examined.
Results. Hearing impairments were detected in over 5% athletes. 2.5% of athletes needed hearing aids prescription.
Conclusions. HH Program enables a more precise analysis of the hearing organ in the group of mentally retarded athletes, and a recognition of subjects who need audiological care.
