Institute for deaf and dumb in Romanov – the first health service centre of this type in Polish territories

The first health service centre for deaf and dumb in Polish territories
was the facility for those persons in Romanov established
in 1805 by Józef August Zieliński (1766-1844), a count, an
extraordinarily rich men. Genealogy of Józef August Iliński, his
controversial life-history are presented in more detail. Ilinski’s
property in Romanov with splendid palace is recounted. His
charity involvements have been reported: financial assistance to
a Volhynian grammar-school, foundation of a cloister, church,
wollen cloth factory and others. The plan of foundation of
institute for deaf and dumb, a versatile educational facility for
teaching those people religion, foreign languages, different crafts,
painting, drawing etc. are described in detail.
